Drenthe: Emmen (2)

Schimmeres: D43

D43 is a so called long barrow, the only one of this type in the Netherlands, so it's something special.

Its 40 meters long and 4.6 meters wide barrow has two portal tombs. The nortern one is 4.6 meters long and 3 meters wide. It consists of three capstones on six sidestones and two endstones. The southern one is 8.1 meters long and 2.9 meters wide. Originally it had five capstones on ten sidestones and two endstones. One sidestone and two endstones are missing.

The barrow lies in Emmen at the mainstreet to Odoorn "Odoornerweg". Just north of the mainstreet N381 the footpath Langgrafweg turns to the left. At its end you find the grave

Emmerdennen: D45

D45 is a very beautifully situated passage-grave, which even had a prominent guest. Emporer Napoleon of France who was highly interested in the megalithic cultures visited it in 1809.

Six of the originally nine capstones still are present, three of them have slipped half into the chamber. Moreover there are nine sidestones in the west and eleven at the eastern side. From the entrace there has only one sidestone left. It is oriented to 180°, the chamber opens to 102°30′. Furthermore there are 21 kerbstones.

Having a length of 18.5 meters, and a width of 4.5 meters this is one of the longest megalithic tombs in the Netherlands. It lies in the central forest of Emmen near the railway-station, at the crossroads Boslaan / Boermarkweg. Comming from the station go down Boslaan (away from the centre!) to Boermarkeweg. There turn left and after some meters a small way leads to the left to the grave.

Angelslo, Fokinger Slag: D46
Haselackers: D47

It's hard to imagine that the place where today lie the tombs D46 and D47 5000 years ago was covered by a dense oak-forest. Today round the tombs there are residential areas from the 70ies. That's why the whole place looks quite strange and unreal.

Both tombs consist of ten sidestones both endstones and five capstones. About an entrance nothing is known.

D46 is 9.5 meters long and 3.6. meters wide. The chamber is oriented to 84°30′.

D47 is a little bit smaller. It is 6.5 meters long and 2 meters wide. Its chamber is - unusually - oriented to 21°30.

Both tombs lie in the quarter of Angelslo in Emmen. D46 can be found in the street Fokkingeslag. This can be reached from the main street Statenweg. From there, near the crossroads with Rondweg, goes Kersellaan to the north. From that street to the right turns as the third street Fokkingeslag.

D47 lies nearby. Some meters further, near Rondweg to the north turns Boerschaplaan from Statenweg. The first street to the left is the street Haselakkers where the grave lies.
